Transition to Secondary School

As a Catholic Primary School many of our children move onto St John Payne Catholic School in Chelmsford.

About St John Payne School

We aim to create an inclusive community where everybody is valued and nurtured, and where each person is encouraged to make use of their God-given talents to the full.  We are committed to the achievement of every single child regardless of his or her ability. The students, as you will see if you visit us,are happy, hardworking and very positive about the school. Ours is a friendly school where children flourish in a stimulating and supportive learning environment.  At St John Payne School we promote Christian values and seek not only to achieve excellence intellectually but also spiritually. It is our belief that there is much more to school life than just the

rigour of examinations and through our daily interactions with our students, we hope that they may become caring, compassionate human beings. The staff, who are well qualified, enthusiastic and passionate about education, are also a particular strength of the school. They work very hard to ensure all lessons are

engaging, challenging and enjoyable. We are also blessed with excellent Governors who, along with the rest of us work to ensurethat our students get a great education.

Moving onto secondary school is always an enormous change for children.  During year 6 we help the children to develop their independent skills, and routines so that they are ready for transition.  Time management skills and increased responsibility with involvement in the running of the school eg: School Council, Sports Ambassadors, Play leaders and Peer Mediators. We run a workshop for parents during which we discuss all elements of transition. In class the children have many opportunities to discuss transition.  Past pupils visit to share their experiences.  Holy Family staff liaise closely with secondary schools to allow them to get to know their new intake.  For pupils with particular needs extra visits are arranged. We end our time together with a special Leavers' Mass which celebrates the children's time at Holy Family, and also offers prayers for their happy and successful future education and life.

Some of our children choose to go to school in Witham to one of the secondary academies.
