Year 5

Easter Holidays:

As we approach the Easter Holidays, I just wanted to let you all know that I am thinking of you all. I hope you and your families are all well.

Throughout the Easter Holidays, you can continue with any of the activities and challenges below, from the previous couple of weeks.

You might also want to focus on the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. Have a go at creating your own images and prayers for each of the Stations.

I wish you and your families a very Happy and Holy Easter.

Here are some of the GPS and Maths Mysteries that we love doing in class, too.

I am also uploading Pirate Game sheets and Powerpoint - this would be a great game to play with your family!

Coronavirus Plans to Support Work at Home:

I hope that you are all well and are enjoying doing some learning at home at the moment. I have added lots of new challenges below for the week beginning 30.3.20. Lots to keep you entertained! I'm sure you're all managing to keep in touch with each other through messaging etc - don't forget that you can go onto GoBubble too!

I'm missing you all lots.

We have set up some work to support your child during this period at home.  Please do your best to complete what you can and support your child at home in a way that suits you and your child's needs.

The most important things to continue daily are:

* Reading: All children are able to log into

https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html using their AR log in details. On this site, the children will be able to access a huge variety of different books - all at the correct reading level for them. After reading the book, your child will be able to access and complete the AR quiz for their book.

Hearing your child read and discuss texts read - re-read books from home, read cookery books, instructions to games, magazines, etc if your school books are completed.  If your child finishes their school book, they can write a Book Review.

* Times Tables: Learning their times tables by heart and then practising theses on the TTRS website.  Their logins are in their Reading Record Books.

* Spellings: Spelling Shed will have the spellings to be practising in your class set up each week.  You can test your child's spellings in sentences at the end of a week to see what they have remembered.  This is a good time to practise joined neat handwriting presentation while they learn the new spellings also.  Play as many games as possible online using their logins.

RE

Dear all. In these troubling times our faith becomes all the more important to us. On our 'Our Faith' page I have added many resources for RE that include prayers, Easter Stories, Learning resources and much more that you can share/do with your child. These resources are updated weekly. Please click on the link below, which will take you directly to Our Faith page.

Hello Key Stage Two,

I hope that this finds you well. I’ve been thinking that this is an ideal time to learn more Spanish. I miss being able to meet you to do this but I hope that you might like some of the activities attached to work on at home. Mostly, see this time as an opportunity to learn a skill that you always wanted to learn but rarely had time to focus on. Spanish could be this skill! Year six, this will keep you well prepared for secondary school too. Keep well, keep happy and take good care.

Hasta pronto!

Mrs Lonergan

Science Challenge:

Can you stop ice cream from melting? (Thermal Insulators investigation)

Find a container and add some ice cream.

Find a material to wrap around the container - you will need a range of materials to repeat your investigation.

Leave the wrapped container for a set amount of time - you can choose this.

After that amount of time has passed, check and see if/how much of the ice cream has melted.

Choose a way to record your results.

Repeat the investigation with different materials.

Do some research about different thermal insulators/conductors. Remind yourself of what happens to the particles in a solid when they melt - draw a diagram to illustrate this.

Continue with your Geography Project Challenge:

Our new topic is based on Mountains.

Please use your imagination to create a project based on mountains - you may choose to focus on one particular mountain or a particular mountain range or a variety of different mountains.

You need to research information about the mountain - it's height/climate/location etc

You also need to research mountains in general - how are they formed? Why are they located in those particular places? Why are they colder at the top than the bottom? What is the highest peak in each continent?

Oddizzi would be an excellent place to start with your research - log in details can be found above. There is also a quiz about mountains to complete on the Oddizzi website.

RE Challenge:

Read the scripture on the PowerPoint from Mark - the Garden of Gethsemane.

Reflect on how Jesus would have been feeling at this time.

Study the different pieces of art based on the Agony in the Garden.

Create your own piece of art based on these - try to ensure that you reflect Jesus' feelings in your artwork.

Extra RE Challenge:

Research Hot Cross Buns - what is the symbolism behind them? Why do we traditionally eat them on Good Friday?

Find a recipe and have a go at making your own!

WEEK ONE - ONLY IF REQUIRED AND SCHOOL CLOSURE OCCURS

  • Book review on a book read during the week
  • Compare this book to another read by the same author or similar style and identify similarities and differences.  Pick out favourite sections and comment on the way the author has helped you to visualise the story.
  • Handwriting practise of new spellings (refer to Spelling Shed website link above)

Maths Ideas

  • TTRS practise online
  • Practising fractions on the Top Marks website.
  • Top Marks web site for games online.

Science Ideas

  • Create an investigation using the ideas from Science Week – you could use bottles at home and take the investigation further with your rocket mice – consider making the mouse heavier or lighter and compare outcomes.  Remember to make it as much of a fair test as possible.  Draw a picture or take a photo of your investigation and write about it under the headings (REFER TO ATTACHED DOCUMENT).

RE: Giving Sacrifice Topic (Lent/Easter)

Learning Intention: Giving or refusing to give; appreciating the cost of giving

Read Sean’s story (attached document above) and consider the questions below:

  1. What and how does Sean give?
  2. Why do you think he cares for his brother?
  3. What do you think about Sean?
  4. What happens when Sean refuses to give?  How do you think he feels?
  5. What makes you think that Sean appreciates the cost of his giving?
  6. Who do you know who gives generously of their time or is a carer?  For whom do they do it and why?
  7. How do you feel when you give?
  8. How do you feel when you refuse to give? Why do you refuse?
  9. What can the cost of giving be?

TASK: Investigate words which are connected with giving – for example, sacrifice, selfless, unselfish, courageous, brave, strong, kind, generous, donation and gift.  Collect as many words as you can.  Discover the words which mean the opposite of your words.  Choose one ‘giving’ word and write a poem which conveys the meaning to the life of a Christian.

Learning Focus 1: Lent, the opportunity to turn away from evil.

Read Church’s Story 3 pages 96 and 98 on Lent. (ATTACHED DOCUMENTS).  After Jesus had been baptised by John in the river Jordan he went into the desert.  Jesus needed to be alone to pray in preparation for his ministry.  It was not an easy time for Jesus.  He was tempted by the devil, but he resisted him, and the experience strengthened him for his mission.

Read Luke 4:1-12 (REFER TO ATTACHED DOCUMENT).  Consider what happened to Jesus in the desert and how he responded.  It is important to stress that temptation itself is not wrong, wrong occurs when temptation is given into.

  1. Why did Jesus go into the desert by himself?
  2. What did you notice about the way the devil tempted Jesus?
  3. What did you notice about the way Jesus responded each time?
  4. How do you respond when you are tempted to do wrong?
  5. What helps you to resist temptation?
  6. How would you link Jesus’ time in the desert to the experience of Lent?

TASK: Make your own Lenten calendar showing how you will spend the forty days of Lent preparing for Easter.  Leave a blank square at the end of each week to fill in after reflecting on your actions giving reasons for how they have shaped your life and the lives of others.
