Year 5

School Trip to Layer Marney

Year 5 had a wonderful time visiting Layer Marney Tower to supplement this terms history topic on Ancient Greece. We learnt all about Ancient Greek daily life and had a go at making flour from wheat. Firstly, we had to rub the wheat ear between our hands to separate the chaff from the wheat, then we rubbed two bricks together to make the flour. We found out what hard work it was to make only a small amount of flour! Next, we had a go at some weaving before getting to try some typical Greek foods such as radish, spring onions, sheep's cheese and olives.

It was interesting to learn about how herbs were used in Ancient Greek medicine (and some form the basis for medicines still used today) and we even found out how the Ancient Greeks used sage to keep their teeth clean and we had a go ourselves! Finally we learnt all about the Greek Gods.

Keyboard lessons

For Anti-Bullying week, Year 5 looked at what it meant to ‘Be Kind’ and considered times when people had been kind to us and how that made us feel. We then wrote a kind phrase or word on a piece of paper and made a kindness paperchain for our classroom. We also wrote poems around the theme of kindness. Finally, we coloured in a mindfulness ‘kind’ phrase that we will give to someone we care about to brighten their day.

Victorian Workshop
Year 5 were lucky enough to take part in a workshop about Victorian Britain. We learnt about the importance of the invention of the steam engine on the change that occurred in Victorian Britain, as well as learning about the different jobs that children would be expected to do at the time, including in the mines.
We learnt about the Brunel’s ship SS Great Britain and ran 8 times across the playground to see how long the ship was! Finally, we learnt about Morse code and took it in turns to use a telegraph to make a Morse code word and then the rest of the class had to use the code to work out each other’s words!
