Curriculum Intent:  Modern Foreign Languages at HFS

French at Holy Family School

We aim to develop children’s experience of language acquisition and encourage curiosity about languages as a means of communication in our modern world. We aim to support children to be able to express themselves in French in speech and writing. Whilst teaching French, we also draw upon other learning opportunities across the curriculum. For example, during our Around the World Day studies in Geography, we have been looking at the location of French speaking countries. We seek opportunities to embed language learning during theme days, which include International Languages Day in September, and our annual french day during the summer term.

Teaching and Learning Overview

This is in line with the recommendations of the Primary National Curriculum and the teacher will draw upon a range of techniques to ensure that children of all abilities meet their full potential. Children are encouraged to:

  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • Develop the ability to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We use Salut! and a range of other resources to teach and assess a child’s experience of the French language in key stage two.
