Sports Premium

At Holy Family Catholic Primary School we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Progressive learning objectives, combined with sympathetic and varied teaching approaches, endeavour to provide stimulating, enjoyable, satisfying and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all pupils. Through the selection of suitable differentiation and logically developed tasks, it is intended that pupils, irrespective of their innate ability, shall enjoy success and be motivated to develop further their individual potential and take part in lifelong physical activity.

What is the Sports Premium?

The Government is continuing to provide funding per annum for the academic year. This is to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary aged pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Head Teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE

  • new or additional Change4Life sport clubs

  • paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport

  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport

  • running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games

  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport

  • providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

As you are aware we have the Bronze Sports Mark for the academic year 2015-16. This was a great achievement for our small school. Each year we have to reapply for the Sports Mark and this year (2016-7) we aimed for the Silver level. We are pleased and proud to announce that this year we have been awarded our Sports Mark and it is GOLD!

This is a huge achievement for us as a small school and the hard work of both the staff and children has paid off. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for their continued support in our sporting activities.

This truly represents our mission statement of

'Living, Loving and Learning together'

The Sports Premium funding has made a huge difference to sport on offer to the children at Holy Family School.  Below are the results of the first year of having this extra funding in school.  We look forward to planning for the next academic year carefully building on the success we have achieved this year and further developing what we have started this year, alongside our Sports Leader, Sports Coordinators, Sports Ambassadors, children and staff.
